The Giraffe That Walked to Paris
Written by Nancy Milton Illustrated by Roger Roth
We spent several weeks on this book, and since we studied France earlier this year we concentrated on ancient Egypt. The girls were really into Cleopatra and pyramids.

Highlights:
We enjoyed learning about hieroglyphs and learning to write ur own names in hieoglyphics. Probably the most fun was mummifying a doll and making her coffin, and building pryamids from clay; my 6th grader also compared the dimensions and insides of different pyramids at Nova's Pryamids - the Inside Story and designed her own pyramid.

My daughter picked this book because we just finished Hanna's Cold Winter and was intriged by the time line of this book taking place immediately after Hanna, and seeing the damage done by the war we read about in Hanna.

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Grey Bridge Written by Hildegarde H. Swift Illustrated by Lynd Ward
Although my older daughters have studied this book this is the first time for my youngest daughter. I made a set of GeoSafari Cards to go with the lessons on Bridges and Boats.
Highlights:
The highlight was definately building a lighthouse, bridge, and Statue of Liberty from paper. Even the older sisters got involved and soon a paper New York City took over the living room!
For mom, the highlight was when my beginning reader read a book entirely on her own and loudly announced all the compound words she found in the book - a lesson we had done 3 days earlier.

We studied to early to mid 1800's time period in American history. Emphasizing slavery and the Underground Railroad. This lead into a study of the Civil War and reasons for and the effects of the war. We colored a US map of that time dividing it into the Union states and the Confederate states.
